I knew that the President had the White House, of course, but I never knew that the Vice President had a provided designated home of his own. I guess, if I thought about it at all, that he either lived in the White House as well, or in his own home in the DC area. The latter was actually true for most of the history of the vice presidency, but in the 70s rising concerns over security prompted the government to designate Number One Observatory Circle at the US Naval Observatory as the Vice President's official residence while in office. Before that, back to 1923, the house was the home of the Chief of Naval Operations (highest ranking officer in the US Navy, reports to the Secretary of the Navy who is the civilian head), and before that, it was the home of the superintendent of the observatory from its construction in the 1890s. The US Naval Observatory, by the way, is a primarily scientific institution, concerned with timekeeping and astronomical charting, and although under Navy auspices, conducts little in the way of military programs.
